Retail Cashier Training Checklist

The register is where a retail shift is measured, because every transaction passes through it and every error is recorded. Ringing accurately, applying discounts correctly, handling returns to policy, and keeping the drawer secure are four separate skills sharing one position.

The checklist (5 items)

Written as observable actions, so two trainers scoring the same shift land in the same place. In CrewSharp this is the Register / POS station in the Retail starter set, filed under Sales Floor, and every item here is editable.

  1. 1Greeted the guest and thanked them by close
  2. 2Rang items accurately and applied discounts correctlyMust pass
  3. 3Invited loyalty sign-up or promotions naturally
  4. 4Processed returns and exchanges per policy
  5. 5Handled the cash drawer securely

Print it, score it on a clipboard, or open it in Sheets. No email required.

What usually goes wrong

Accurate ringing and discount handling is the required item and the one with a financial tail. A mis-applied discount is not noticed at the till, it is noticed at reconciliation, by which point nobody remembers the transaction.

When to sign someone off

A workable bar for this station: no critical items missed, a score above a line you set for Register / POS specifically rather than one number for the whole building, and observed on more than one shift with at least one of them busy. Then date it, so it can expire.

That last part is the one people skip. A sign-off with no date cannot be re-checked, which means a year later you have a record that says somebody was ready once.

Other retail checklists

The rest of the set, if you are building out the whole floor rather than one position.

Common questions

What should a new cashier be able to do before working alone?

Complete a standard sale, take every payment type you accept, and know exactly what to do when something falls outside policy. That last one matters most: the failure mode for a new cashier is improvising on a return rather than asking.

What should be on a retail cashier checklist?

The 5 items above cover it: greeted the guest and thanked them by close, rang items accurately and applied discounts correctly, invited loyalty sign-up or promotions naturally, and the rest of the list. Keep it in that range. Fewer and a pass proves very little; many more and trainers stop finishing it during a real shift.

Does this station need critical items?

Not every station has one. Where nothing on the list carries a safety or legal consequence, a passing score plus observation across more than one shift is a reasonable bar on its own. Marking items critical when they are not just makes the flag mean less everywhere else.

Scoring it is the part that lasts
