Forklift Operator Training Checklist

A forklift is the heaviest moving thing most warehouse workers will ever drive among people on foot. This checklist covers the habits that keep it that way safely, from the pre-use inspection through how the truck is parked at the end of a run.

The checklist (11 items)

Written as observable actions, so two trainers scoring the same shift land in the same place. In CrewSharp this is the Forklift Operation checklist in the Warehouse / Fulfillment starter set, filed under Receiving, and every item here is editable.

What usually goes wrong

The pre-use inspection and the seatbelt are both critical and both get skipped for the same reason: they feel slow on a busy morning. Most forklift incidents trace back to a fault someone would have found or a restraint someone was not wearing.

The items a good total should not outweigh

  • Completed the pre-use inspection before operating
  • Wore the seatbelt every time the truck moved
  • Kept clear of pedestrian walkways

When to sign someone off

A workable bar for this checklist: no critical items missed, a score above a line you set for Forklift Operation specifically rather than one number for the whole building, and observed on more than one shift with at least one of them busy. Then date it, so it can expire.

That last part is the one people skip. A sign-off with no date cannot be re-checked, which means a year later you have a record that says somebody was ready once.

Other warehouse / fulfillment checklists

The rest of the set, if you are building out the whole floor rather than one position.

Common questions

Does this checklist replace forklift certification?

No. Certification is the legal requirement and has to come from an approved course. This checklist is what a supervisor uses afterwards to confirm the person drives that way on a normal shift when nobody is grading them.

What should be on a forklift operator checklist?

The 11 items above cover it: completed the pre-use inspection before operating, wore the seatbelt every time the truck moved, kept the forks low when traveling, and the rest of the list. Keep it in that range. Fewer and a pass proves very little; many more and trainers stop finishing it during a real shift.

Which items should count as critical?

On this checklist, 3 items are marked critical: completed the pre-use inspection before operating; wore the seatbelt every time the truck moved; kept clear of pedestrian walkways. Missing one means not ready, regardless of the total score, because these are the failures that cannot be corrected after the fact.

Scoring it is the part that lasts
