Retail Cashier Training Checklist
The checklist (12 items)
Written as observable actions, so two trainers scoring the same shift land in the same place. In CrewSharp this is the Register checklist in the Retail starter set, filed under Sales Floor, and every item here is editable.
- 1Greeted the customer as they reached the counter
- 2Scanned every item, including anything left in the cart or basketMust pass
- 3Checked that each scanned price matched the shelf tag
- 4Applied discounts and coupons correctly
- 5Mentioned the loyalty program or current promotion naturally
- 6Processed returns and exchanges to policy
- 7Called a manager for anything outside policy
- 8Removed or deactivated every security tag
- 9Counted back change to the customer
- 10Kept the cash drawer closed between transactions
- 11Wrapped fragile items before bagging them
- 12Thanked the customer and handed over the receipt
Print it, score it on a clipboard, or open it in Sheets. No email required.
What usually goes wrong
Scanning every item is the required item, and the misses happen at the bottom of the cart and the back of the basket. A mis-applied discount has the same problem: nobody notices it at the till, only at reconciliation, by which point nobody remembers the transaction.
When to sign someone off
A workable bar for this checklist: no critical items missed, a score above a line you set for Register specifically rather than one number for the whole building, and observed on more than one shift with at least one of them busy. Then date it, so it can expire.
That last part is the one people skip. A sign-off with no date cannot be re-checked, which means a year later you have a record that says somebody was ready once.
Checklists that pair with this one
Someone trained on this one most often covers these alongside it, which makes them the sensible second checklist to train.
Common questions
What should a new cashier be able to do before working alone?
Complete a standard sale, take every payment type you accept, and know exactly what to do when something falls outside policy. That last one matters most. The usual mistake from a new cashier is improvising on a return when they should have called a manager.
What should be on a retail cashier checklist?
The 12 items above cover it: greeted the customer as they reached the counter, scanned every item, including anything left in the cart or basket, checked that each scanned price matched the shelf tag, and the rest of the list. Keep it in that range. Fewer and a pass proves very little; many more and trainers stop finishing it during a real shift.
Does this checklist need critical items?
Not every checklist has one. Where nothing on the list carries a safety or legal consequence, a passing score plus observation across more than one shift is a reasonable bar on its own. Marking items critical when they are not just makes the flag mean less everywhere else.
Scoring it is the part that lasts
Run this Register checklist on a tablet between rushes and CrewSharp keeps the rest: who is signed off, when it was last checked, and which item your crew misses most.
