Group Fitness Instructor Checklist

Running a group class is a delivery skill on top of a technical one. The instructor has to start on time with the room ready, find out who is new or injured before the first rep, and keep watching twenty people at once while also leading the workout from the front.

The checklist (12 items)

Written as observable actions, so two trainers scoring the same shift land in the same place. In CrewSharp this is the Group Fitness Class checklist in the Gym / Fitness studio starter set, filed under Floor, and every item here is editable.

What usually goes wrong

Correcting unsafe form straight away is the critical item, and in a group it is the one most often skipped. The instructor is mid-cue with music playing, and stopping to fix one person feels like slowing everyone down. That pause is the job.

The items a good total should not outweigh

  • Corrected unsafe form straight away

When to sign someone off

A workable bar for this checklist: no critical items missed, a score above a line you set for Group Fitness Class specifically rather than one number for the whole building, and observed on more than one shift with at least one of them busy. Then date it, so it can expire.

That last part is the one people skip. A sign-off with no date cannot be re-checked, which means a year later you have a record that says somebody was ready once.

Checklists that pair with this one

Someone trained on this one most often covers these alongside it, which makes them the sensible second checklist to train.

Common questions

Does a certified instructor still need a sign-off?

A certification says they know the material. A sign-off says you have watched them deliver it to your members in your room. They answer different questions, and the second is the one that predicts how a class actually goes.

What should be on a group fitness instructor checklist?

The 12 items above cover it: set up the room and equipment before class time, started the class on time, asked first-timers and anyone with injuries to speak up, and the rest of the list. Keep it in that range. Fewer and a pass proves very little; many more and trainers stop finishing it during a real shift.

Which items should count as critical?

On this checklist, one item is marked critical: corrected unsafe form straight away. Missing one means not ready, regardless of the total score, because these are the failures that cannot be corrected after the fact.

Scoring it is the part that lasts
